Bah
Notes and Bev Naps
By Eddie Doyle, August 2006
Here we are in August already and the temperature outside is a HOT & HUMID 98 degrees. I mention this because it was brought to my attention that my last newsletter from the Cheers web-site began with me saying that we just had 17-inches of snow. Let's just say that the snow has officially melted.
Right now, olde "Beantown" is dealing with the split personality of our beloved Red Sox. When we began the season, I thought that we were entering the 2006 Campaign with a very good defense, a very good starting pitching staff, a somewhat questionable bullpen group and an offense that had to go out and produce enough runs to win. The season started off pretty good, except for a few "speed bumps", but "YIKES".it didn't take long for the hot dogs to go bad. "Big Papi" and "Manny-being-Manny" are holding up our offense, the pitching staff has been snake-bitten by the injury bug, the bullpen has one good arm. "Papelbon".and the defense has been great!!! We desperately need a healthy Tim Wakefield back in the line-up ( start him off in the bullpen ? ), we need Mr. Wells to start to shine again and we would like to see "Josh" paint the outside of the plate a little bit more instead of trying to throw the "heater" down the pipe and have it bouncing off Bertucci's window in Kenmore Square. Most of all, if we have any chance of making the playoffs, we have to have Jason Varitek behind the plate. I wish Pedro were here with his roll of duct tape so we could wrap it around a few dudes in the bullpen.for cryin' out loud!
Hey, if you think back to our great 2004 season, the late-season "bumps in the road" drove me absolutely bonkers.but what a finish. We really enjoy all the fans from other Cities coming into Boston to root for their teams. Many of them call Cheers their base of operation in Boston. We usually get some good old-fashioned ribbing from the Yankee fans, especially after the "Boston Massikah" of '06. I have mixed feelings about the fact that I have never been to Yankee Stadium nor visited a local Sports Bar in the "Sour Apple" to reciprocate. Maybe some day.(is there really a "Hell's Kitchen Restaurant in New York?)
The touristas are flocking to Cheers and we are only a few days away from Labor Day.where did the summer go? I have always liked the Fall Season.the foliage and the change to cooler weather. Over the past five years we have noticed more and more people visiting our fair city in the fall. There are a large number of visitors who come by way of cruise ships. I think it starts in New York and stops at Newport RI, Martha's Vineyard, Boston, and on up to Maine and Nova Scotia. Usually they are a fun group of folks and good tippers.too bad we can't say that for the ship's staff OUCH
Well, until the next "Bah Notes & Bev Naps".there's about 125 days until Christmas so get out there and get the jump on your Holiday Shopping (did I mention you can order Cheers souvenirs through our web site?). The NE Patriots are playing their first pre-season game, the Celtics and Bruins are still trying to figure out who will be on their teams this year and Boston College is gearing up for another great football season at The Heights.
So, next time we meet, keep your powder dry and most importantly, remember all of our "Kids" who are serving our Country in the Middle East. They are in "Harm's Way' and we pray for their safe return home.
