Cheers
Faneuil Hall History
In 2001 Tom Kershaw was offered the opportunity to
create a restaurant and bar operation in the Faneuil
Hall Marketplace. That year the Marketplace was celebrating
the 25th anniversary of its creation by the Rouse Company
and the City of Boston back in 1976. The Marketplace
was actually built in 1826 and served as a functioning
marketplace for meat, poultry, eggs and butter until
its renovation and redirection in 1976. Mr. Kershaw
jumped at the opportunity to open a new facility in
the Marketplace because he envisioned the opportunity
to recreate the bar as it appeared on the set of Cheers.
This
would provide visitors to Boston an opportunity to visit
the set as they had seen it on television. Having visited
the set in Hollywood many times and actually appearing
on two episodes of the show, Mr. Kershaw directed the
construction of the bar to replicate the one seen on
television. If you compare the pictures that are available
of the set with the actual bar, you will see the similarity.
The location at Faneuil Hall Marketplace provides a
lot more opportunity than just the reproduction of the
bar. There is a café, a patio and a lower bar
all designed to replicate the fun atmosphere that was
originally found at the Bull & Finch Pub on Beacon
Street and subsequently viewed worldwide on the TV series.
Several
items are on view in Cheers that came from the show.
We have Sam’s Red Sox jacket, Cliffie’s
mailman suit, Lilith's Eco-podi uniform, and a variety
of other items that fans will enjoy seeing.
Cheers at Faneuil Hall is not just a museum. It's a
wonderful place to wine and dine, to eat and drink,
and to have a good time. There are two bars very similar
in nature, both island bars that are always lively and
fun. The patio provides outdoor dining and the café
provides the comfort of indoor dining. The facilities,
open from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m., serve food until midnight
seven days a week. Live entertainment every Thursday,
Friday, and Saturday nights.
Food is served throughout the facility and features
a wonderful selection of burgers and sandwiches as well
as New England seafood items and appetizers, chowders,
soups and stews. Specials each day provide an opportunity
to choose items that are special to New England and
ably prepared by our chefs. The bars are prepared to
serve you cocktails and wines of your choice as well
as 10 draft beers.
Located in the heart of downtown Boston, Cheers at
Faneuil Hall Marketplace serves not only visitors to
Boston but many of the local business people and residents.
The Marketplace is a fun place to go because it provides
not only drinking and dining, but unique shopping.
Cheers in Faneuil Hall Marketplace also has a retail
shop just outside the front door. Be sure to visit this
shop, because it has all of the items that you will
need to take back to your friends at home. Just down
a few steps is all of the apparel, glassware and other
souvenirs that you will enjoy purchasing.
Although Cheers at Faneuil Hall Marketplace is relatively
new, many of the staff came from Cheers on Beacon Street,
and the management from Beacon Street is overseeing
operation. The same attention to detail and concern
for your enjoyment is exhibited at the Marketplace.
